Steve Jobs / 1955 – 2011

We have lost one of our most influential and innovative minds in the world, Steve Jobs. After a long and arduous battle with cancer, the founder of Apple Inc., the previous chief executive of Pixar Animation Studios, and member of the board of directors of The Walt Disney Company, passed away at the age of 56. He left behind and empire built on his creative genius and innovative way of thinking. His influence on the world will surely be felt for many generations to come.

From the introduction of the first Macintosh computer, it was evident that Steve Jobs had the kind of mind that only comes once in a lifetime. More recently, Steve Jobs is known for the creation of the iPod, the portable music player that revolutionized the music world; the iPhone, the smart phone that has turned into one of the most efficient and useful tools in the 21st century in terms of both communication and daily activity use; and finally, the iPad, the tool that will truly redefine the future of communications technology and computing.

Steve Jobs will be remembered as the innovator, great public speaker, and business genius he was. His legacy will live on in the company he created and the many innovative products it provides.

We would like to send our condolences to all Steve’s close friends and family members. He will be missed.

Jes Senia / Faces of New York

New York City consists of traffic, buildings, amazing food, great bars and concert venues, but most importantly it consists of people and their identities. There’s nothing more diverse than a population of 8,175,133 faces all coming from different backgrounds, beliefs, and cultures. All of this and more makes New York City one of the most unique cities in the world.

Most pictures used in the collage were taken outside because that’s where most of us meet; we cross paths, we rush, communicate verbally or nonverbally, and often engage in our actions. We’re connected through cabs buses and subways, where we’re collected and dispatched. But it’s not only about the movement and the rush, it’s about our destinations as individuals, what defines us, what benefits us, and what can eventually hurt us. As for me, I’m here in the concrete jungle to fulfill my dreams and enjoy doing it my way.

Great news to all of our fellow fashion enthusiasts: The young and rising fashion designer Jason Wu will be dropping his collection at Target this February! Remembered for his dresses worn by Michelle Obama, his latest collaboration with Target has had everyone talking and saving up for some good ol’ affordable fashion.

In the midst of New York Fashion Week 2011, his Spring 2012 Ready-to-Wear collection got our attention considering his execution of minimalistic and predominantly monochromatic design, accentuating the female body in all its fabulous femininity with a hint of androgyny.

In times of uncertainty, we always have ourselves as our own blank canvases of style. Despite the political, social, and economic unrest we are faced with as a collective, we have fashion as individuals.

THE DOLOIST / OCCUPY WALL STREET

Recently, there’s been a lot of chatter about this revolutionary movement called “Occupy Wall Street.” Today, I had to find out what it was all about. It was quite an experience given I’ve really never witnessed a non-violent protest at this magnitude. There was definitely a good 500 people at Liberty Plaza. For the people who have slept there, they definitely have accommodated themselves creating makeshift living arrangements. I give these people a lot of credit for what they’re doing.

Overall, my observations were what I expected. A peaceful congregation of spirited individuals united against the machines that run our broken economy. There was a good of mixture young adults, veterans, teenagers, little children and last but least, law enforcement. It’s actually ironic because I used to work for one of the financial giants three years ago. I was one of the few that left and haven’t looked back since.

Despite the challenges ahead, I’m confident that positive changes will be made because message has definitely been heard!

DMELOQ / Let No Love Fall Victim To Circumstance

Have you ever imagined living in a world where actions, decisions and your whole life was controlled by the government or a higher power? Well for those of us who have lived in a world of freedom where we are allowed to make our own decisions as well as the consequences that follow such, the thought of it is almost unbearable and illogical.

Last Friday night, I had the opportunity to watch a film that incorporated unacceptable acts in the status quo of Iran. Set in Tehran, Iran but filmed mainly in Beirut, Lebanon because of legal reasons, the plot of this dramatic love story is based on two high school students that fall in love in an oppressed society where homosexuality is not accepted. Having completely different lifestyles, Atafeh , a rebellious girl from a wealthy nuclear family and Shireen an orphan that lives with her grandmother in a humble home, share a fatal attraction for each other due to the culture they were born into. Thirsty for adventure and to experience in life, they start to frequent the city at night going to undercover clubs and clandestine apartment parties surrounded by drugs, alcohol and sex. The scenes are bold and portray how repressed women act in a place where no one judges them and freedom is somehow reached.

When watching the film, it gave me a sense of gratefulness and it made me value the freedom I have of making my own decisions and expressing my feelings in complete tranquility. This film could also relate to the LGBTQ community because even though we live in a free country they face this kind of issues, not in such degree of course but sometimes not being fully accepted in society could be traumatic and many would stay inside the “closet” to be free of these judgments.

Since BVEW & Be You are here to support artists, we’ve invited other companies with the same mindset and goals to set up tables at the Poetry Club to provide you with information about opportunities for artists of all kinds. Exhibiting companies include Rotting Television, Blank Label, & the Exquisite Corpse Festival.

We will also be screening videos starring the artists who performed at the last Be You Series event this Summer.

In addition, Blank Label’s very own The Madd Musician of Illastic Mindz will provide music to keep you moving all night long!

RI-Define | Glorified Fashion/Glamorized Style

With Fashion Week on its way, we thought it was appropriate to reflect on ourselves. After all, at the end of the day we are walking advertisements of our own aesthetic. These days, everybody seems to like fashion but only a few truly acknowledge its counterpart of style. Personally, I have always liked the idea of fashion. Yet at the same time, I have always gravitated more towards the idea of style. The distinction between these two is found in the clothes we wear, how we wear it and why we want to look a certain way in the eyes of the public. The style should be the factor that sets us apart from others, while the fashion is the underlying element that brings everyone together. Thus, in celebration of Fall 2011 Fashion Week, inspire yourself with a little visual stimulation.

Due to our nature as media nomads, as previously explored, we are somewhat blinded by the standards set by fashion. Whether we realize it or not, we are force-fed with what is acceptable by advertisements that depict the latest desirable trend. As a result, the constant need for what is “new and exclusive” blinds us from our own pursuits of style. Searching for what is acceptable based upon the standards of the fashion industry, which some may classify as trends or fads, deprives us of our own creative freedom. As for the highly regarded and well-respected fashion designers as well as the models that help sell their vision, their standards of fashion and style sold to the public are merely understood and accepted within the context of the fashion industry itself. The act of being followed for being different surpasses the act of following others for being the same. The ideals set by our consumerist society should only be regarded as just another ploy of materialism of wanting things that we do not need. As a collective we enjoy the idea of playing dress-up and as individuals we feel the need to belong based on the images we see.

Any facet of one’s self is influenced by the idea of fashion. Style, on the other hand, is the underlying factor that makes one stand out from the rest. Thus, for the sole purpose of exploring fashion and its distinction from style, both forms of artistic expression are clearly present for all to consume by the masses although they are not always understood by the individual. I personally view style to be a taste of perspective for one’s own personal and artistic expression. It is important to seek inspiration from others but it is imperative that we breathe aspiration from ourselves and our own creativity. Therefore, in the comfort of your own homes and closets, seek the fashion but find your style.

Publish and photograph various Blank Label events to further establish our presence and give exposure to clients
